How to Find Your Perfect Scent!

Whenever I meet someone and the conversation leads to career, I am always fascinated to learn how few people know that fragrance is an industry, all of its own. What I’ve learned is that most people automatically associate fragrance with the beauty counters at department stores…  When in fact, fine fragrance, is just one segment of a very large industry. Fragrance is in many products from cleaners and candles to perfumes and shampoos…  Creating a fragrance involves many people, and the actual fragrance is just one ingredient of many in finished products… I welcome and appreciate this opportunity to explain how fragrance and our sense of smell should never be taken for granted!

Scent is one of the most powerful of senses. Smelling a certain fragrance can signal a season or a treasured memory or simply make a mundane task like cleaning a little more enjoyable. Every day and night of our lives we encounter odors, many of them go unnoticed, but they are there. Our sense of smell is our only sense directly linked to the brains limbic system, which holds our memories. This is why, I believe, fragrance is so very personal.

The most frequently asked question I receive is; what is the best fragrance for me to wear? How does one answer a question that has no definitive answer? Fragrance is such a personal purchase, because we associate our own memories and experiences with everything we smell. Taking a trip to the perfume counter can be overwhelming for anyone, but with a bit of determination and my perfume shopping tips, you will be donning your signature scent in no time. Here are a few helpful tips on finding the perfect scent for you!

Don’t be pulled in by packaging, brand or price… Just because a fragrance is Chanel or Prada, is in a luxurious bottle and has a high price point, doesn’t mean it is the right scent for you… look beyond these marketing traps and follow your nose… Many would be amazed to find out how much of the products cost is spent on the “marketing” versus the fragrance itself in many perfumes!

SMELL, smell, and smell again, but never rush into buying. Most times you can request samples to experience and revisit, this will help you to understand what types of fragrances you enjoy. Never settle for anything less than LOVE, listen to your nose, you are the most important person to please when it comes to this purchase!

Fragrances are comprised of 3 layers;

  • Top notes (Perceived immediately upon application of a perfume, top notes consist of small, light molecules that evaporate quickly. They form a person's initial impression of a perfume and thus are very important in the selling of the product.)
  • Middle Notes (The scent of a perfume that emerges just prior to when the top notes dissipate. The middle note compounds form the "heart" or main body of a perfume and emerge in the middle of the perfume's dispersion process. Scents from this note class appear anywhere from two minutes to one hour after the application of a perfume.)
  • Bottom Notes (Base notes bring depth and solidity to a perfume. Compounds of this class are often the fixatives used to hold and boost the strength of the lighter top and middle notes. Bottom notes are not typically perceived until 30 minutes after the application of the perfume or during the period of perfume dry-down. Some base notes can still be detectable in excess of twenty-four hours after application, particularly the animalic and musk notes.)

Now that you understand the notes, you must approach each fragrance with an open mind! Allow a fragrance to develop on your skin, not a blotter. Fragrance smells differently on skin then it does on a blotter through all three stages. Now ask yourself do you enjoy this scent at each stage?  Does this fragrance speak to you, does it make you happy? The perfect scent for you will be enjoyed at each and every stage.

Another suggestion I have is, be open to fragrances marketed for the opposite gender. Many times a fragrance designed for men will appeal to women and vice versa.

Finally, my best suggestion, once you find the fragrance that makes your heart skip a beat, BUY IT! Once you discover what fragrance type is made for you, you will have no trouble at all building the perfect fragrance wardrobe! Because no one can have only one pair of shoes, so why only own one fragrance!
